Corsairs Split with #24 Western Connecticut State

DANBURY, Conn. -- The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth softball team split with nationally ranked Western Connecticut State University in a pair of Little East Conference games on Saturday afternoon. UMass Dartmouth outlasted Western Connecticut in 12 innings to take the 4-3 win in Game 1 and the Colonials took the back half of the double header by a score of 6-2.

UMass Dartmouth is now 9-17 overall and 5-5 in conference play, while Western Connecticut, who is ranked #1 in the New England Region and #24 in the country, moved to 25-7-1 and 7-3.

Sophomore Shannon Orton (Swansea, Mass.) outlasted Emily Cintorino to earn the complete game win for the Corsairs. Orton captured her seventh win of the season as she surrendered three runs, five hits and fanned seven. Cintorino went 11 and a third, allowed four runs on six hits and struck out seven batters.  

After both teams scored unearned runs in the tenth inning (3-3), freshman Chelsea Correia (Bridgewater, MA) hit a one-out sacrifice fly to score freshman Ally Santerre (Swansea, MA) from third for the eventual game-winning run.

UMass Dartmouth put the first run of the game on the scoreboard in the top of the third when senior Emily Pontes (Tewksbury, Mass.) singled home Correia. In the bottom half of the inning, the Colonials took advantage of a fielding miscue to tie the game at one. Two batters later, Jessica Caturano singled home Maegan Rodriguez to give the home team the lead (2-1). In the following top half of the inning, Correia drew a bases loaded walk to tie the game at two runs apiece.  

Sophomore Rachel Carey (Holbrook, Mass.) and Pontes each recorded a pair of hits for the Corsairs.

After a scoreless first and second inning, Western Connecticut broke out for five runs in the bottom of the third.  With the bases loaded, Erin Weber drew a base on ball to force home the first run of the contest. Julia Bocek followed with blast over the fence in right field to clear the bases and give the Colonials a 5-0 lead.

UMass Dartmouth got one run back in the top of the fourth when freshman Alea Martinelli (Everett, MA) led off with a single to left and stole second.  With two outs, freshman Marissa Spinuzzi (Fair Lawn, NJ) hit an RBI single up the middle to trim the Western Connecticut advantage to four (5-1).

In the top of the sixth, UMass Dartmouth added another run when Martinelli reached on her second single of the ball game. Spinuzzi blasted a double to left field to knock home Martinelli and cut the deficit down to three (5-2).  

The Colonials added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when sophomore Kristen Sliman hit a two-out RBI double to right center to score sophomore Rodriguez from second.

In the circle, Alle Sabith allowed two runs on six hits in seven innings to record her 13 win of the season for the Colonials.

The Corsairs continue LEC play on Wednesday, April 23, when UMass Dartmouth hosts Rhode Island in a pair of games beginning at 3:30 p.m.
