PAWTUCKET, R.I. – University of Massachusetts Dartmouth senior Marissa Spinuzzi (Fair Lawn, N.J.) picked up her first Little East Conference honor of the season on Monday, earning Player of the Week honors after batting .357 in four games.
Spinuzzi went 5-for-14 at the dish in a pair of weekend doubleheaders for the Corsairs to lead her squad. She drove in four runs and connected for three extra-base hits as UMass Dartmouth went 3-2 on the week. In the Corsairs’ first game with Plymouth State on Saturday, Spinuzzi gave UMass Dartmouth the early advantage with a two-RBI double in the first inning and scored on the next play. In game two, she added another RBI to her total with a bases-loaded single as part of a five-run Corsair inning. UMass Dartmouth swept the Panthers by 5-3 and 10-4 scores.
The senior second baseman then helped lift UMass Dartmouth to its first win over Wheaton (Mass.) since 2002 on Sunday, posting a 2-for-3 outing in the second game. Spinuzzi launched a lead-off homer in the fourth to put the lead at 3-1, and the Corsairs eventually prevailed 3-2.
On the season, Spinuzzi leads the Corsair roster with a .394 batting average, 17 RBIs and two home runs. She owns nine doubles on the spring, and earlier this week moved into the second overall spot in the Corsair record books with 32 career doubles and third all-time with 75 RBIs.
UMass Dartmouth looks to extend its winning streak on Tuesday, hosting Bridgewater State for a make-up doubleheader beginning at 3:15.
