Softball's Historic Season Ends With LEC Tournament Setback To UMass Boston

DARTMOUTH, Mass. --  Junior Jess Greenspan (Rocky Hill, Conn.) tossed a two-hitter and fanned a pair, as fifth-seeded UMass Boston posted a 9-1 victory over top-seeded UMass Dartmouth in an elimination round game of the 2019 Little East Conference Softball Championships Saturday afternoon at the UMD Softball Complex.

The visiting Beacons advanced to the championship round where they fell to third-seeded Eastern Connecticut by an 8-0 margin in five innings, as UMass Boston finished its season at 23-20.  The host Corsairs, who captured their first-ever Little East regular season title earlier this week, finished the year at 23-18 overall.

Senior Taylor Pawlina’s (Woonsocket, R.I.) RBI double in the first staked the Beacons to the early lead, and UMass Boston took advantage of three second inning errors to extend that margin to 4-0.  UMass Dartmouth plated their lone tally in the third on sophomore Leah Major’s (Fairhaven, Mass.) run-scoring double to right center, but UMass Boston responded with four more tallies in the bottom of the frame on an error and sophomore Cassidy Gaeta’s (North Reading, Mass.) bases clearing double.  Sophomore Tori Dicenso’s (Lynn, Mass.) leadoff homer in the bottom of the fifth ended the contest and enabled the Beacons to advance to the championship round.

Senior Roxanne Vento (Arlington, Mass.) rapped out two of UMass Boston’s six hits in the elimination contest, as Greenspan earned her 16th win of the spring.  Freshman Averi Soares (New Bedford, Mass.) added a single on the day for UMass Dartmouth, as sophomore Jill Richards (Kingston, Mass.) allowed an earned run over the first 1 1/3 frames to suffer the setback inside the circle.
