NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Junior right-hander Katie O'Neill (Braintree, MA/Fontbonne Academy) pitched a four-hitter in the first game and Curry held off a late rally in the second game as the Colonels swept a non-conference doubleheader from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's softball team, 8-1 and 13-9, at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Thursday.
The Corsairs trailed, 9-1, going into the bottom of the fifth inning of the nightcap. Freshman third baseman Kate Kelly (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk HS) and sophomore second baseman Kayla Peixoto (Fall River, MA/Durfee HS) hit back-to-back homers, and sophomore catcher Desiree Souza (Swansea, MA/Case HS) added a sacrifice fly to make it 9-4.
Junior designated hitter Alysia DiMuzio (Quincy, MA/Quincy HS) and junior first baseman Christina Sancinito (Wakefield, MA/Wakefield HS) hit sacrifice flies as the Colonels scored three runs in the top of the sixth, but UMass Dartmouth came back with five runs in their half of the inning. Senior first baseman Katelyn Crockett (Webster, MA/Bartlett HS), Peixoto, junior shortstop Vicki Andruszkiewicz (Danvers, MA/Danvers HS) and sophomore catcher Kathleen L'Abbe (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) each singled and drove in a run. The Corsairs had the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the seventh, but CC freshman reliever Amanda Peters (East Bridgewater, MA/East Bridgewater HS) escaped the jam and retired the side. Curry scored their 13 runs on just six hits, taking advantage of four Corsair errors. Junior Ashley Ricciardi (Tewksbury, MA/Tewksbury HS) pitched the first four innings and earned the win, improving to 2-3, while freshman right-hander Ashley Puls (West Springfield, MA/West Springfield HS) started and took the loss for UMass Dartmouth and fell to 1-8.
In the opener, sophomore second baseman Peni Diamond's (Wethersfield, MA/Wethersfield HS) solo home run in the bottom of the second inning accounted for the Corsairs' offense. DiMuzio drove in two runs and freshman third baseman Kayla Moitoso (Warwick, RI/Saint Raphael Academy) homered for the Colonels. O'Neill improved to 10-3, while junior right-hander Amie Nickerson (Wrentham, MA/King Phillip HS) started and took the defeat, seeing her record fall to 4-9.
"We started the second game a little bit slowly on offense, but we got a lot more hits than we've been getting," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Kelly Roy-Sale. "Our hitting is starting to come along, we've just got to put everything together and we'll be fine. We hit some balls hard in the first game, but we hit them right at people."
UMass Dartmouth dropped to 5-17 with the losses, while Curry improved to 19-11 with the victories. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Keene State Saturday in a Little East Conference doubleheader, while the Colonels will visit conference opponent Eastern Nazarene Saturday.
