WILLIMANTIC, CT-Host Eastern Connecticut State held the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's softball team to seven hits and swept a Little East Conference doubleheader, winning 9-0 and 9-1 at Howard Spector Field Tuesday evening.
Freshman third baseman Kate Kelly got two hits for the Corsairs in the nightcap, while junior shortstop Vicki Andruszkiewicz (Danvers, MA/Danvers HS), and sophomore catcher Kathleen L'Abbe (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) and sophomore second baseman Penni Diamond (Wethersfield, MA/Wethersfield HS) had hits in the opener. The Warriors broke the first game open with seven runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, while ECSU scored four runs in both the third and fourth innings in the nightcap. Catcher Krystle Denny homered twice, singled and doubled and drove in five runs for Eastern Connecticut, while first baseman Rachel Denny had four runs batted in.
Katie Pensiero pitched a complete game in the opener, improving her record to 10-3. Junior right-hander Amie Nickerson (Wrentham, MA/King Phillip HS) took the loss and fell to 5-11. In the nightcap, Caitlin Cravens pitched the first four innings and improved to 9-3, while freshman right-hander Ashley Puls (West Springfield, MA/West Springfield HS) started and took the loss for UMass Dartmouth, falling to 1-10.
ECSU improved to 21-9 and 10-2 in the Little East Conference, while UMass Dartmouth dropped to 6-20 and 2-10 in the Little East. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Western Connecticut State Saturday in a Little East Conference doubleheader. The games will preceded by Senior Day ceremonies.
