CAPE CORAL, FL-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's softball team was limited to a single run and dropped both games of their season-opening doubleheader at the Cape Coral Sports Complex Monday. The Corsairs lost to St. Joseph's (Maine), 9-1, and then fell to St. Mary's (IN), 15-0. Both games ended after five innings due to the eight-run rule.
In the opener, senior outfielder Michelle Conway (Burrillville, RI/Burrillville HS) reached base three times, junior first baseman Kaitlin Hogan (Tewksbury, MA/Shawsheen HS) had a double, and junior catcher Hannah Rounds (Lincoln, RI/Lincoln HS) and junior outfielder Elizabeth Mulready (Rockland, MA/Rockland HS) each added hits.
Junior Brittany Eldridge (Raynham, MA/Bridgewater-Raynham HS) started and took the loss in the opener. Freshman Julia Greenwood (Westport, MA/Westport HS) started the nightcap, and was relieved by junior Ashley Felaccio (Acushnet, MA/Fairhaven HS/Massasoit CC). Greenwood took the loss. In the second game, Lauren Enayati homered and drove in five runs for the Belles, while Monica Palicki pitched a two-hit shutout.
"Hopefully, we got all the cobwebs out," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Amy Sasin. "Hopefully, we melted all the ice, and we'll play better tomorrow."
The Corsairs dropped to 0-2 with the losses. St. Mary's improved to 2-2, while St. Joseph's improved to 2-0. UMD will continue their spring trip when they play Smith and Fredonia State Tuesday. St. Mary's will play Curry and Salem State Tuesday, while St. Joseph's will play Washington (MD) and Worcester State.
