BOSTON, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's softball team dropped both games of their Little East Conference doubleheader to host UMass Boston Saturday at the Clark Athletic Center. UMB won the opener, 8-3. and took the nightcap, 8-0 in five innings.
In the first game, UMass Boston scored five runs in their first two at bats and led all the way. Third baseman Erika Vecchiet doubled home a run in the first inning to give the Beacons a 1-0 lead.
The Corsairs took the lead with two runs in the top of the second when freshman second baseman Marissa Arponen (Plymouth, MA/Plymouth HS) and freshman shortstop Emily Pontes (Tewksbury, MA/Essex Agricultural Tech HS) walked with the bases loaded.
Right fielder Natalie Bouyea hit a solo homer in the last of the second to tie the score, and center fielder Christine Polsonetti hit a three-run homer to put UMB ahead for good. Junior left fielder Elizabeth Mulready (Rockland, MA/Rockland HS) drove in UMass Dartmouth's third run when she walked with the bases loaded. Katie Corey scattered five hits and earned the win for the Beacons, improving to 8-5. Junior pitcher Brittany Eldridge (Raynham, MA/Bridgewater-Raynham HS) took the loss for UMD and dropped to 6-8.
In the nightcap, Emily Wolf pitched a one-hit shutout. Eldridge had the Corsairs' only hit, a leadoff single in the top of the second inning. Catcher Sue Killilea had a double, a home run, three hits and two runs batted in for UMB, while first baseman Lisa Polsonetti and shortstop Taryn Asta also drove in two runs apiece. Wolf improved to 10-3, while Eldridge took the loss again and fell to 6-9.
The Corsairs dropped to 6-11 and 1-5 in the Little East Conference, while UMass Boston improved to 18-8 and 2-2 in LEC play. UMD will return to action when they visit Curry n a doubleheader Sunday. UMass Boston will visit Keene State Tuesday.
