NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's softball team and host Salem State split their non-conference doubleheader at Alumni Field Thursday. The Vikings won the opener, 3-0, and the Corsairs took the nightcap, 4-1.
After falling behind in the first inning of the second game, UMass Dartmouth scored twice in the fourth inning and twice more in the seventh. UMD got back to back doubles from junior pitcher Brittany Eldridge (Raynham, MA/Bridgewater-Raynham HS) and junior catcher Hannah Rounds (Lincoln, RI/Lincoln HS) in the fourth inning to erase a 1-0 Viking lead. In the seventh, one run scored on an error and the second on a single by freshman shortstop Emily Pontes (Tewksbury, MA/Essex Agricultural HS).
In the first game, the Vikings scored in the second on an infield grounder by left fielder Michelle Flower, and added two more in the sixth on a homer by right fielder Taylor Orlando.
Eldridge pitched both games for the Corsairs and limited SSU to nine hits in the twin bill. She lost the opener and won the nightcap and is now 8-13. Lauren DiCredico was the winner in the opener for SSU and improved to 9-3, while Nicole Wilson took the loss in the nightcap and dropped to 4-4.
"We played solid defense, and we hung in long enough to allow our bats to come alive," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Amy Sasin. "We were able to squeak a couple across in the second game, and we scored twice in the seventh to secure things. We came out with more intensity today; it just took us a while to get our bats going."
The Corsairs are now 9-18, while the Vikings are now 18-16. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Framingham State Monday. SSU will host MCLA Friday. .
