Final Stats

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Visiting Eastern Connecticut State limited the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's softball team to three hits and swept a Little East Conference doubleheader, 2-0 and 5-0, at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Friday.

ECSU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning of the opener on a bases-loaded walk to junior shortstop Kim Church (Farmington, CT), and stretched their lead in the fourth on an RBI single by senior first baseman Rachel Denny (East Haddam, CT). Sophomore center fielder Michelle Conway (Burrillville, RI/Burrillville HS) led off the first inning with UMD's first hit, a single, and freshman catcher Hannah Rounds (Lincoln, RI/Lincoln HS) got the Corsairs' other hit, a single in the seventh inning. Senior Katie Pensiero (Stamford, CT) went all the way for the win,

improving her record to 6-1, while UMass Dartmouth starter Ashley Puls (So. West Springfield, MA/West Springfield HS) took the loss and dropped to 0-7. Junior Alyssa Hosford (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro HS) held the Warriors to a run on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings of relief in the first game.

Eastern Connecticut took advantage of two errors to score three runs without a hit in the first inning of the nightcap. Junior center fielder Ashley Sullivan (Trumbull, CT) drove in a run in the third with a double and Church drove home the fifth run with an infield out.

The Corsairs' only hit came in the first inning, when freshman pitcher Brittany Eldridge (Raynham, MA/Bridgewater-Raynham HS) singled with two outs. Freshman Rosie Manzo (Hudson, MA) went six innings, allowing just the one hit, and was the winning pitcher, improving to 2-2. Eldridge went all the way for UMD and took the loss, falling to 5-2.

"We played spectacular defense, but we didn't hit the ball as well as we would have liked," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Kelly Roy-Sale. "Our offense is still a work in progress. Our defense came through in tough situations. (Senior shortstop) Vicki (Andruszkiewicz, Danvers, MA/Danvers HS), (freshman third baseman) Bethany (Berube, Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) and (junior third baseman) Emily (Surprenant, Attleboro, MA/Attleboro HS) made great plays on line drives, and made key plays in important spots. (Sophomore left fielder) Jessica Falzone (Revere, MA/Revere HS) made a leaping catch in left field, and if she didn't make that play, one or two runs would have scored."

The game marked the final home appearance for Andruszkiewicz on Senior Day. "Vicki has been a pleasure to coach," said Roy-Sale. "She's a hard worker and an intense player, and she's going to be hard to replace."

UMass Dartmouth dropped to 7-21 and 2-10 in the Little East Conference, while ECSU improved to 22-6 and 9-1 in LEC play. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Western Connecticut State in a Little East Conference doubleheader Saturday. The Warriors will visit Rhode Island College in an LEC twin bill Saturday.
