NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Visiting Western Connecticut State scored 10 unearned runs and swept a Little East Conference doubleheader from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's softball team, 7-1 and 8-0 at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Saturday. The second game was called after six innings due to the eight-run rule.

The Colonials scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning after errors by UMD freshman first baseman Samantha Howarth (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk HS) and sophomore pitcher Brittany Eldridge (Raynham, MA/Bridgewater-Raynham HS). Sophomore shortstop Danielle Basciano (Holmes, NY/Carmel HS) doubled home the final run of the inning. Sophomore catcher Hannah Rounds (Lincoln, RI/Lincoln HS) singled home the only run for UMD in the last of the fourth. Senior Kara Cullinane (Lindenhurst, NY/ Lindenhurst HS) pitched the first five innings and earned the win for WCSU, improving to 9-5, while Eldridge took the loss and fell to 4-12.

Western Connecticut broke the nightcap open with three unearned runs in the fourth inning. Sophomore second baseman Jackie Zilnicki (Riverhead, NY/Riverhead HS) singled home one run, junior catcher Anna Levesque (Waterford, CT/Waterford HS) hit a sacrifice fly to drive in another, and freshman left fielder Corinna Hussey (Naugatuck, CT/Naugatuck HS) knocked in the third run with a single. Basciano had three hits for the Colonials in the nightcap, while Zilnicki finished with two hits and three RBIs.

Sophomore designated hitter Kaitlin Hogan (Tewksbury, MA/Shawsheen HS) had the Corsairs' only hit in the second game, a two-out single in the bottom of the sixth inning against reliever Magen Dargon (So. Trumbull, CT/Trumbull HS). Junior Brittany Connors (Waterford, CT/Waterford HS), who pitched five hitless innings, earned the win and improved to 5-5. Senior Alyssa Hosford (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro HS) started for UMD and took the loss, falling to 2-5.

"We were flawless until the fourth inning in the first game, and then the floodgates opened," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Kelly Roy-Sale. "It should have been a closer game, but we made too many mistakes. Brittany did not pitch a bad game. We gave up too many unearned runs, and we have to do a better job of making the plays."

UMass Dartmouth dropped to 7-20 and 0-12 in the Little East Conference, while WCSU improved to 19-15 and 7-5 in LEC play. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Eastern Connecticut State Sunday. The Colonials will host Plymouth State Sunday.
