FRAMINGHAM, MA-Junior right-hander Ashley Felaccio (Acushnet, MA/Fairhaven HS/Massasoit CC) pitched a five-hit shutout and junior catcher Hannah Rounds (Lincoln, RI/Lincoln HS) drove home the only run in the top of the seventh inning as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's softball team blanked host Framingham State, 1-0, in the second game and earned a split of their non-conference doubleheader at Farley Field Sunday. The Rams won the opener, 5-4.
Felaccio walked three and struck out seven in improving her record to 3-4.
The Corsairs broke a scoreless tie when senior center fielder Michelle Conway (Burrillville, RI/Burrillville HS) led off the top of the seventh with a walk and stole second. One out later, Rounds singled through the left side to drive home the game's only run. Yaya Faria took the loss for Framingham State and fell to 8-6.
UMass Dartmouth took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning of the opener on an error and a sacrifice by junior first baseman Kaitlin Hogan (Tewksbury, MA/Shawsheen HS). The Rams tied it in the fourth on an RBI double by Christy Ulak and Kasey Phipps' run-scoring single. Junior right fielder Elizabeth Mulready (Rockland, MA/Rockland HS) singled home a run in a two-run sixth for UMass Dartmouth, but FSU took advantage of errors by Rounds and junior third baseman Tracie Calvert (Sandwich, MA/Sandwich HS) to score three unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth. Alysia Morrissette earned the win for FSU and improved to 6-12, while junior Brittany Eldridge (Raynham, MA/Bridgewater-Raynham HS), who relieved Felaccio in the fifth inning, took the loss and fell to 8-20.
The Corsairs are now 11-26, while the Rams are now 14-22. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Bridgewater State Monday. Framingham State will play in the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference playoffs next week.
