STORRS, CT-Host Eastern Connecticut State limited the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's softball team to five hit and swept their Little East Conference doubleheader, 3-1 and 5-0, at the Connecticut Softball Complex Sunday. The games were moved to the University of Connecticut due to construction on ECSU's campus.
The Corsairs got their only run on a solo home run by sophomore pitcher Brittany Eldridge (Raynham, MA/Bridgewater-Raynham HS) in the top of the fifth inning of the opener. Center fielder Ashley Sullivan and pitcher Denise Rathbun homered for the Warriors. Rathbun was the winning pitcher and improved to 19-1.
In the nightcap, designated hitter Katie Sokoloski knocked in three runs for ECSU, while Sullivan had three hits, including a triple. Eldridge, who had a double for UMD, pitched the second game as well. She was the losing pitcher in both games, and fell to 4-14. Kassondra Silva was the winning pitcher, and improved to 2-0.
"We played well against a good team, and Brittany pitched well," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Kelly Roy-Sale. "It was a good effort. We made only one error, and we played solid defense, although we lacked a little on offense."
UMass Dartmouth dropped to 7-22 and 0-14 in the Little East Conference, while ECSU improved to 28-4-1 and 13-1 in LEC play. The Warriors finished as the LEC regular season champion and will begin playoff action Thursday. The games marked the final action of the season for the Corsairs. .
