NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's swimming team downed visiting Simmons, 132-104, in their first match of the spring semester at the Tripp Athletic Center Wednesday evening.
Three Corsairs posted two wins apiece. Junior Katelyn Kidney (Lynn, MA / Lynn Classical) won the 200 yard freestyle in 2:06.89, and the 500 yard freestyle in 5:40.71. Senior Meredith Maki (Holden, MA/ Wachusett Regional HS) took the 1000 yard freestyle in 11:40.53 and the 100 yard backstroke in 1:06.20, and senior Morgan Cooper (Sunderland, MA/Frontier Regional HS) won the 100 yard freestyle in 57.37 seconds and the 100 yard breaststroke in 1:13.40
Senior Maggie Conlon (Methuen, MA/Methuen HS) won the 400 yard individual medley in 5:04.78, freshman Caroline Corcoran (West Boylston, MA/ West Boylston) took the 100 yard butterfly in 1:03.28, sophomore Brooke Garvey (North Billerica, MA/Billerica HS) won the three-meter diving with 155.60 points, and the 400 medley relay team of freshman Caissie Niles (Raynham, MA/Bridgewater-Raynham HS), junior Kerryn Kane (Arlington, MA/Arlington HS), Corcoran and Conlon finished first in 4:36.03.
"We had a great meet this evening," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Cathy Motta. "We've been fighting some flu-like symptoms this week, and had to ask several members of our team to swim events that they don't normally swim. Everyone stepped up to the challenge, and the result was the win."
UMass Dartmouth's women improved to 5-1 with the victory, while Simmons fell to 5-4 with the defeat.
The Corsairs will return to action when they host Eastern Connecticut State Saturday on Senior Day. The Sharks will host Regis Friday.
