WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, VT - The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's swimming team performed well in the first round on the first day of the three-day, New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association Championships, at the Upper Valley Aquatic Center Friday.
The men are in third place in an 11-team field with 139 points, while the women are sixth in a 19-team field with 224 points.
For the women, junior Katelyn Kidney (Lynn, MA/Lynn Classical) finished ninth in the 500 yard freestyle in 5:20.41, senior Morgan Cooper (Sunderland, MA/Frontier Regional HS) was 13th in the 500 freestyle in 5:29.69, freshman Caroline Corcoran (West Boylston, MA/ West Boylston) was eighth in the 100 butterfly in 1:03.38 and 10th in the 200 individual medley in 2:20.14, senior Meredith Maki (Holden, MA/ Wachusett Regional HS) was eighth in the 200 backstroke in 2:15.89 and sixth in the 200 individual medley in 2:18.92, senior Maggie Conlon (Methuen, MA/Methuen HS) was eighth in the 200 individual medley in 2:20.68, senior Megan Brady (Peabody, MA/Peabody HS) was 25th in the preliminaries of the 200 backstroke in 2:32.67, junior Abby Prives (Wellesley, MA/Wellesley HS) was 19th in the 200 individual medley in 2:33.35, freshman Caissie Niles (Raynham, MA/Bridgewater-Raynham HS) was 29th in the prelims of the 200 backstroke in 2:30.15, and freshman Cori Spagna (Raynham, MA/ Bridgewater-Raynham HS) was 27th in the preliminaries of the 50 freestyle in 27.78 seconds. The 200 freestyle relay team of senior Megan Brady (Peabody, MA/Peabody HS), Spagna, sophomore Ally McCarville (Stoneham, MA/Stoneham HS) and Conlon was 15th in 1:50.85, and the 400 medley relay team of Maki, Cooper, Corcoran and Kidney was fifth in 4:15.80.
Among the men, freshman Charles London (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS/Bristol CC) was fourth in the 50 yard breaststroke in 28.16 seconds, sophomore Michael Gryss (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) was eighth in the 50 breaststroke in 28.57 seconds, sophomore Phil Lowney (Mattapoisett, MA/Bishop Stang HS/Roger Williams) was 11th in the 50 breaststroke in 29.00 seconds, freshman Bryan Baranick (Assonet, MA/Apponequet HS) was seventh in the 200 backstroke in 2:05.34 and sixth in the 200 individual medley in 2:06.74, sophomore Tim Doucette (Middleboro, MA/Middleboro HS) was 15th in the 50 freestyle in 23.54 seconds, freshman Max Kearns (Marion, MA/Bishop Stang HS/Northeastern) was fifth in the 200 individual medley in 2:05.84, senior Kevin Janofsky (Brookfield, CT/Brookfield HS) was 10th in the 200 individual medley in 2:10.83, and freshman Robert Braza (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro HS) was 11th in the 200 individual medley in 2:11.97. The 200 freestyle relay team of Doucette, Janofsky, London and Kearns was sixth in 1:32.45, while the 400 medley relay team of Baranick, Lowney, Gryss and freshman Justin Floeck (Middleboro, MA/Middleboro HS) was sixth in 3:48.99.
"We are swimming real well," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Cathy Motta. "We swam some impressive times, and we're excited to have both teams in the top six overall coming out of day one. We're looking forward to the next two days of competition."
The championships will continue Saturday and conclude Sunday.
