BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth swimming & diving teams dropped both decisions against host Bridgewater State on Tuesday evening at the Moriarty Pool. The women fell to a score of 131-99, while the men dropped a 116-109 decision.
The Corsairs won a total of 11 races, five on the men's side and six in the women's meet.
Junior Kaya Flanagan (Fairhaven, Mass.) and sophomore Chrissy Deveaux (North Andover, Mass.) were the top swimmers for the women, both winning all three of their individual races. Flanagan won the 200 yard freestyle (2:06.56), 100 yard butterfly (1:05.11), and the 100 yard backstroke (1:08.10). Deveaux conquered the 200 yard intermediate (2:24.65), 500 yard freestyle (5:41.90), and the 100 yard breaststroke (1:15.72),
Junior Kendra Herbert (Lowell, Mass.) was the only Corsair to receive points in the diving portion of the meet. Herbert received second place in the one-meter dive, with a final score of 204.55.
Junior Grayham Ronan (Millis, Mass.) set the pace for the men's squad, winning the 1,000 yard freestyle (11:12.85), and finishing second in the 100 yard butterfly (59.31). Freshman Alex Butcher (East Longmeadow, Mass.) came in first place in the 100 yard freestyle.
The men's team came won both of the relays in which they competed. The first was the 200-yard medley relay, where the a trio of sophomores, Derek Marshall (Marion, Mass.), Troy Sjahfieden (Mattapoisett, Mass.), Devin Farnsworth (Leominster, Mass.) and senior Kevin Curley (Raynham, Mass) finished in 1:44.88. The second winning relay was the 400 yard freestyle group, including junior Brian McCauley (Franklin, Mass.), freshman Anthony Toscano (Massapequa, N.Y.), Farnsworth, and Butcher which tripped the timer in 3:29.51.
Both teams will be back in action when UMass Dartmouth hosts the annual Louise Goodrum Invitational on Saturday, Nov. 7th at noon.
