Swimming Teams Claim Victory over Elms College

DARTMOUTH, Mass. - Anchored by both relay teams and individual performances, the UMass Dartmouth swimming and diving squads defeated both teams from Elms College at the Tripp Athletic Center on Saturday.  The Corsairs captured 20 of the 32 events on the day.

Kaya Flanagan (Fairhaven, Mass.) largely contributed to the women's win with her first place finishes in the 50-yard backstroke (30.04), 500 yard freestyle (5:38.18) and 100 yard IM (1:07.99) in which she finished nearly 11 seconds faster than the competition.

Jenna Leanues (Lakeville, Mass.) continued to be impactful at the long-distance races, winning the 400-yard medley relay with teammates Chrissy Deveaux (North Andover, Mass.), Flanagan, and Yulyssa Diaz (Dorchester, Mass.). In addition, she finished third in the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 14:01.44, won the 100 yard free in 1:02.04 and was again part of a winning relay with teammates Deveux, Jillian Boyle (Westport, Mass.) and Maddy McKinney (Foxboro, Mass.) in the 200 yard freestyle relay.

Diaz also dominated the 1,000 yard freestyle, winning in 12:17.07 and besting the second place finisher by over a minute.  Boyle won both the 100-yard butterfly and 200-yard freestyle individual events.

In the men's meet, UMass Dartmouth had a decisive win in the 400-medley relay with Derek Marshall (Marion, Mass.), Troy Sjahfiedin (Mattapoisett, Mass.), Grayham Ronan (Millis, Mass.), and Brian McCauley (Franklin, Mass.) swimming a time of 4:00.90.  Sjahfiedin also took home individual honors in the 50 yard backstroke with a time of 30.76, out-touching his Elms counterpart by .13 seconds.   

In the 100 yard butterfly, Ronan took home the win in 59.52 as well as tying for top place in the 100 IM.  The 50 yard freestyle saw the Corsairs finish one-two with Kevin Curley (Raynham, Mass.) and Timothy Doucette (Middleboro, Mass.) securing 13 points with their finish. Doucette and Robb Braza (Attleboro, Mass.) were also the top two finishers in the 50 yard butterfly with times of 26.78 and 29.49, respectively. 

The Corsairs are back in the pool in two weeks, when the men travel to Colby-Sawyer on Friday, Dec. 4 and the women to Westfield State on Saturday, Dec. 5.
