WPI Sweeps Corsair Swimmers

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's swimming team fell to visiting Worcester Polytechnic Institute at the Tripp Athletic Center Thursday evening. The WPI men won, 123-118, and the women prevailed, 138-103.
The men's meet went down to the final event, with the Engineers winning the 200 yard freestyle in 1:32.90. For the men, senior Matt Fahey (New Bedford, MA/Middleboro HS) won both the one-meter diving (229.40 points) and the three-meter diving competition (259.80 points), junior Craig Johnson (Acushnet, MA/New Bedford HS) took the 50 yard freestyle in 22>27 seconds, freshman Jake Pesante (Wakefield, RI/South Kingston HS) won the 200 freestyle in 1:50.23, junior Steve Szarek (Middletown, CT/Middletown HS) won the 200 breaststroke in 2:24.80, and the 200 yard medley relay team of freshman Chris Dodge (Holden, MA/Wachusett Regional HS), freshman Matt Dean (Londonderry, NH/Londonderry HS), Johnson and Szarek was victorious in 1:44.31.
For the women, sophomore Kim Moore (Billerica, MA/Billerica HS) and senior Kathleen Foley (Haverhill, MA/Haverhill HS) were both double winners. Moore won the 500 yard freestyle in 5:40.98 and the 1000 freestyle in 11:31.63, while Foley took the 200 individual medley in 2:23.68 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:13.10. Freshman Morgan Cooper (Sunderland, MA/ Frontier Regional HS) won the 50 freestyle in 26.68 seconds, while freshman Cecelia Rius (Rockville, MD/Richard Montgomery HS) took the one-meter diving competition with 203.25 points.
"We had several people who were unable to compete because they were ill, but we had some strong swims," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Cathy Motta. "We are tired. Once we get through this weekend, we'll get ready for our final regular season meet, and we'll get ready to taper for the championships."
UMass Dartmouth's men are now 3-3, while the women are 4-5. The WPI men are 2-4 and the women are 2-5.
The Corsairs will return to action when they host Plymouth State Saturday. WPI will visit Clark next Wednesday night
