WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, VT-Fourteen University of Massachusetts Dartmouth swimmers and four relay teams advanced to the finals on the first day of action at the three-day New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association Division II and III Championships at the Upper Valley Aquatic Center Friday.
For the women, sophomore Kim Moore (Billerica, MA/Billerica HS) advanced by finishing sixth in the 500 yard freestyle in 5:33.87, freshman Morgan Cooper (Sunderland, MA/Frontier Regional HS) was eighth in the 50 yard breaststroke in 33.60 seconds, freshman Maggie Conlon (Methuen, MA/Methuen HS) was 12th in the 200 backstroke in 2:20 56 and freshman Meredith Maki (Holden, MA/Wachusett Regional HS) 18th in 2:22.55, junior Lindsay Little (Danvers, MA/Danvers HS) was 17th in the 50 freestyle in 27.07 seconds, and senior Kathleen Foley (Haverhill, MA/Haverhill HS) was fifth in the 200 individual medley in 2:22.80. The 200 yard freestyle relay team of senior Kaitlyn Kewriga (Stoughton, MA/Stoughton HS), Foley, sophomore Carly Wadsworth (Haverhill, MA/Haverhill HS) and Little was 16th in 1:50.73, while the 400 medley relay team of Maki, Foley, Cooper and Conlon was ninth in 4:21.02.
For the men, David Adams advanced by finishing 12th in the 50 yard freestyle in 23.55 seconds, and finishing eighth in the 100 yard butterfly in 55.71 seconds. Junior Craig Johnson (Acushnet, MA/New Bedford HS) was fifth in the 100 butterfly in 54.30 seconds, freshman Jake Pesante (Wakefield, RI/South Kingston HS) was 15th in the 500 yard freestyle relay in 5:06.74, freshman Chris Dodge (Holden, MA/Wachusett Regional HS) was 12th in the 200 yard backstroke in 2:10.66, junior Steve Szarek (Middletown, CT/Middletown HS) was fifth in the 50 yard breaststroke in 27.96 seconds and freshman Matt Dean (Londonderry, NH/Londonderry HS) was eighth in 28.93 seconds, junior David Lyons (Haverhill, MA/Central Catholic HS) was sixth in the 200 yard individual medley in 2:06.60, while freshman Kevin Janofsky (Brookfield, CT/Brookfield HS) was 10th in 2:16.01. The 200 yard freestyle relay team of Dean, Szarek, Lyons and Pesante was seventh in 1:32.57, while the 400 yard medley relay team of Dodge, Szarek, Johnson and Pesante was fourth in 3:44.52.
"We had some great swims, and we have athletes in almost every event in the finals," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Cathy Motta.
The meet will conclude Sunday.
