NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's swimming team defeated visiting Regis in the 2010-11 season opener for both teams at the Tripp Athletic Center Saturday. The UMD men won, 172-91, and the women prevailed, 161-83.
For the women, junior Kim Moore (Billerica, MA/Billerica HS) won the 1000 yard freestyle in 11:49.90, sophomore Morgan Cooper (Sunderland, MA/Frontier Regional HS) won the 100 yard butterfly in 1:04.52 and the 200 yard freestyle in 2:04.18 and the 50 yard butterfly in 28:57, sophomore Maggie Conlon (Methuen, MA/Methuen HS) won the 50 yard breaststroke in 35.29 and the 100 yard breaststroke in 1:16.30, senior Lindsay Little (Danvers, MA/Danvers HS) took the 50 yard freestyle in 28.03 and the 100 yard freestyle in 1:03.53, sophomore Meredith Maki (Holden, MA/Wachusett Regional HS) won the 50 yard backstroke in 32.42, and sophomore Kristin Reinhart (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale HS) won the one meter diving competition with 160.65 points. The 200 yard medley relay team of Maki, Cooper, Conlon and sophomore Lindsay Days (Mattapoisett, MA/Bishop Stang) won in 2:03.71.
For the men, sophomore Josh Potcner (Brockton, MA/Cardinal Spellman HS) won the 1000 yard freestyle in 12:42.21, freshman Eric Frohman (Woodbridge, CT/Amity HS) won the 50 yard back stroke in 27.79 and the 100 yard backstroke in 1:00.29, senior Steve Szarek (Middleton, CT/Middleton HS) took the 50 yard breaststroke in 29.67 and the 100 yard breaststroke in 1:06.29, senior Craig Johnson (Acushnet, MA/New Bedford HS) won the 100 yard butterfly in 58.26, senior David Lyons (Haverhill, MA/Central Catholic HS) won the 50 yard freestyle in 24.19, senior David Adams (Tyngsboro, MA/Tyngsboro HS) won the 100 yard freestyle in 53.89 and the 50 yard butterfly in 25.77, and freshmen Christian Francia (Hampton, NH/Winnacunnet HS) won the one meter diving competition with 174.27 points. The 200 yard medley relay team of Frohman, Szarek, Johnson and senior Andrew Haughey (W. Springfield, MA/W. Springfield HS) won in 1:45.49.
"We had a nice first meet with some good swims," said Corsairs Head Coach Cathy Motta. "We have two young teams and need to get in some good practices before our meet at Babson on Saturday."
UMass Dartmouth's men and women both improved to 1-0 with the victories, while the Regis men and women dropped to 0-1 with the losses.
The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Babson next Saturday. The Pride will host Bridgewater next Friday.
