Swimmers Split at University of New England

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's swimming teams split their meet with host University of New England at the UNE Campus Center Pool Saturday. The women lost, 144-118, while the men defeated UNE's club team, 185-56.
For the women, senior Kathleen Foley (Haverhill, MA/Haverhill HS) won a pair of events -- the 200-yard individual medley (2:26.96) and the 200-yard butterfly (2:36.63). Freshman Maggie Conlon (Methuen, MA/Methuen HS) was victorious in the 200-yard backstroke (2:25.12), freshman Morgan Cooper (Sunderland, MA/Frontier Regional HS) in the 200-yard freestyle (2:06.50), and sophomore Kimberly Moore (Billerica, MA/Billerica HS) won the 1000-yard freestyle (11:48.70).
For the men, the team of sophomore Tom Silva (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk HS), junior Steve Szarek (Middletown, CT/Middletown HS), junior David Adams (Tyngsboro, MA/Tyngsboro HS) and junior Andrew Haughey (West Springfield, MA/West Springfield HS) won the 200 yard medley relay in 1:48.61, freshman Jake Pesante (Wakefield, RI/South Kingston HS) won the 1000 yard freestyle in 11:34.85 and the 500 yard freestyle in 5:25.58, freshman Chris Dodge (Holden, MA/Wachusett Regional HS) won the 100 yard backstroke in 1:02.43 and the 200 yard backstroke in 2:20.05, Szarek won the 100 yard breaststroke in 1:07.33, the 200 yard individual medley in 2:18.47, and the 200 yard breaststroke in 2:28.35, junior Joe Krzystofik (Chicopee, MA/Chicopee HS) won the 200 yard butterfly in 2:19.24, David Adams won the 40 yard freestyle in 24.31 and the 100 yard butterfly in 1:00.30, and the team of Silva, freshman Matt Dean (Londonderry, NH/Londonderry HS), David Adams and Haughey won the 200 yard freestyle relay in 1:38.10.
"We had several people who were ill, but our team really stepped up as a whole," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Cathy Motta. "We hope to get our first win at Bridgewater Tuesday."
The Corsair women are now 0-2, while the men's record remained at 0-1, since UNE's men's team is a club team and the result does not count in their overall record. The Corsairs will return to action when they host the UMass Dartmouth Invitational next Saturday.
