Women's Tennis Falls to Bridgewater State, 6-3
Freshman Hannah Schulze
NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Visiting Bridgewater State won two of the three doubles matches and went on to defeat the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's tennis team, 6-3, in their Little East Conference match at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Wednesday afternoon.
The Bears grabbed the upper hand after play was resumed by winning at number one and number two doubles. Play had been suspended with all three doubles matches in progress due to inclement weather on October 4th. BSU then won four of the six singles matches to clinch the victory.
Freshman Hannah Schulze (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) and junior Liz Girczyc (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro HS) put the Corsairs on the board by defeating freshmen Rachel Eramo (Rowley, MA/Ipswich HS) and Melissa Flynn (Stoneham, MA/Stoneham HS), 8-6, at number three doubles. Schulze defeated Eramo at number five singles, 7-5, 6-0, and sophomore Allison Furtado (Fairhaven, MA/Fairhaven HS) downed junior Ashley Pereira (Assonet, MA/Apponequet HS) at number four singles, 4-6, 6-4, (11-9), winning a super-tiebreaker.
BSU came through at the top of the singles lineup. Sophomore Jenna Williamson (Ludlow, MA/Ludlow HS) defeated sophomore Nicole Pelletier (Swansea, MA/Case HS) at number one singles, 6-3, 6-4; senior Bridget Murphy (Mattapoisett, MA/Old Rochester HS) downed senior Courtney Morey (Mashpee, MA/Mashpee HS) at number two singles, 6-4, 6-3; and junior Julie Kraby (Wrentham, MA/King Philip Regional HS) defeated sophomore Angela Pollard (Portsmouth, RI/Portsmouth HS) at number three singles, 6-4, 6-4.
"We had some very close matches, and Bridgewater pulled them out," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Ralph Perry. "I was proud of our effort, but Bridgewater deserved to win today. We got an outstanding performance at third doubles from Hannah Schulze and Liz Girczyc, and Hannah and Allison did a good job for us in singles."
The Corsairs dropped to 7-4 and 4-3 in the Little East Conference with the defeat, while the Bears improved to 10-1 and 7-0 in the LEC with the victory. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Western Connecticut State Friday. Bridgewater State will visit Salem State Saturday.
