NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's tennis team swept all three doubles matches and went on to defeat Western Connecticut State, 9-0, at the Dartmouth Tennis Center Friday.
The Corsairs took the early lead in the Senior Day match that was moved indoors because of inclement weather.
Freshman Hannah Schulze (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) and junior Liz Girczyc (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro HS) defeated sophomore Lauren Decker (Staatsburg, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes HS) and freshman Danielle Core (Goshen, CT/Wamogo HS) at number three doubles, 8-1. At number two doubles, sophomore Angela Pollard (Portsmouth, RI/Portsmouth HS) and sophomore Allison Furtado (Fairhaven, MA/Fairhaven HS) downed sophomores Alyssa Panasci (Gosehn, CT/Wamogo HS) and Terry Osei (East Hartford, CT/East Hartford HS), 8-2. Sophomore Nicole Pelletier (Swansea, MA/Case HS) and senior Courtney Morey (Mashpee, MA/Mashpee HS) defeated senior Maxx Zimmer (Sandy Hook, CT/Newtown HS) and freshman Stefani Signorello (Meriden, CT/Maloney HS) at number one doubles, 8-4.
In singles, Pelletier defeated Signorelli, 8-0; Morey downed Zimmer, 8-6; Pollard defeated Panasci, 8-0; Furtado downed Decker, 8-0; Schulze defeated Osei, 8-4; and Girczyc downed freshman Nicole Salamacha (Winsted, CT/Torrington HS), 8-1. All six singles matches were played as eight-game pro sets due to time considerations.
"It was a good team win for us," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Ralph Perry. "Our doubles teams played extremely well against an up and coming young team from Western Connecticut. We played well in singles, from Nicole all the way down to Liz Girczyc. Courtney and Maxx Zimmer battled back and forth and Courtney won the last game to take the win. I'm happy with the way our team played and I'm looking forward to playing in the Little East tournament on Tuesday."
The Corsairs improved to 7-4 and 4-3 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while the Colonials dropped to 0-7 and 0-5 in the LEC with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action in the Little East Conference Tournament next Tuesday. Western Connecticut State will host Rhode Island College Saturday.
