NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's tennis team will begin post-season play when they host Southern Maine in the first round of the Little East Conference Tournament Tuesday afternoon. The fourth-seeded Corsairs and fifth-seeded Huskies will meet at 3:00 p.m. at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex.
UMass Dartmouth, Southern Maine and Plymouth State finished in a three-way tie for third place in the LEC with identical 5-3 conference records. PSU won the tie-breaker and is the third-seeded team.
The Corsairs will take an 8-4 overall record into Tuesday's match, while the Huskies are 8-7. Southern Maine swept all three doubles matched and defeated UMass Dartmouth, 5-4, October 1st in Gorham. Unlike the regular season match, Tuesday's match will end as soon as one team wins five matches.
"We're thrilled to be in the tournament, we have a pretty good draw, but we face tough competition against Southern Maine, which beat us at their place," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Ralph Perry. "We'll have to play better in doubles than we did the first time. We have to win some of the doubles in order to win. We won four of the six singles matches, but two of them went three sets and could have gone either way."
If the Corsairs win, they will travel to top-seeded Bridgewater State Thursday. "We played well against Bridgewater the first time, but we can't look ahead," said Perry. "We have to take it one at a time. Since the match is over as soon as someone gets to five, it's very important to get off to a good start by winning as many of the doubles as we can."
The winner of Tuesday's match will travel to Bridgewater State for a semi-final match Thursday afternoon.
