Sophomore Alex Post
NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's tennis team was able to get some experience for a couple of their newcomers in a 9-0 victory over host Newbury in a non-conference match at the Pine Manor College Tennis Courts Friday afternoon.
Sophomores Alex Post (Plymouth, MA/Plymouth North HS) and Casey Auman (Springfield, MA/Cathedral HS) each earned their first victories of the season in Friday's match. Post defeated Alex Derderian of the Nighthawks at number three singles, 8-2, while Auman downed Olivia Iafrate at number four singles, 8-0.
Senior Courtney Morey (Mashpee, MA/Mashpee HS) defeated Kristen Conners at number one singles, 8-3, and sophomore Allison Furtado (Fairhaven, MA/Fairhaven HS) downed Jennifer Swafford at number two singles, 8-2. Morey and Furtado combined to defeat Connors and Swafford at number one doubles, 8-0, while freshman Hannah Schulze (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) and junior Liz Girczyc (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro HS) downed Derderian and Iafrate at number two doubles, 8-0.
"As the scores indicated, we played extremely well," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Ralph Perry. "A couple of our younger players, Alex Post and Casey Auman, served well, moved the ball around consistently, and hit the ball very well. I was disappointed that Newbury did not have a full squad for the match."
The Corsairs improved to 7-2 with the victory, while the Nighthawks dropped to 1-9 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Salem State next Tuesday.
