LEICESTER, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's tennis team defeated host Becker, 9-0, in their 2012 season opener at the Hawks' campus tennis courts Thursday afternoon.
The Corsairs swept all three doubles matches. Juniors Nicole Pelletier (Swansea, MA/Case HS) and Elizabeth Cignoli (Springfield, MA/Cathedral HS) defeated Nicole Connolly and Kathleen Razzaboni at number one, 9-7; junior Angela Pollard (Portsmouth, RI/Portsmouth HS) and sophomore Hannah Schulze (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) blanked Anna Pilip and Cameron Murphy at number two, 8-0; and senior Liz Girczyc (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro HS)and junior Casey Auman (North Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) downed Shauna Buckley and Kerry Saltvick at number three, 8-0.
Junior Daniela Roman (Somerset, MA/Somerset HS/New Haven) made her UMD debut at number six singles, defeating Buckley, 6-0, 6-0. Pelletier defeated Connolly at number one, 6-4, 7-5, and Schulze came back to down Razzaboni at number two, 3-6, 6-2, (10-3).
"I was very happy that we got off to a good start, it was a good team effort, all the way down the line," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Ralph Perry. "Nicole Pelletier and Liz Cignoli played well in doubles, they fell behind, and battled back to win it. Hannah came back to win after dropping the first set. It was a good way to begin the season, but we're really going to be tested Saturday."
The Corsairs improved to 1-0 with the victory, while the Hawks dropped to 1-2 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will open their home season Saturday afternoon against Emmanuel.
