NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA –Host Bridgewater State swept all six singles matches and went on to defeat the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's tennis team, 8-1, at the Dr. Henry Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts Monday.
The Corsairs won one of the three doubles matches, with senior Liz Girczyc (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro HS) and sophomore Hannah Schulze (Chelmsford, MA/ Chelmsford HS) defeating Alison Vautrin and Rachael Eramo at number three in a tie-breaker, 9-8 (7-5). At number one, juniors Nicole Pelletier (Swansea, MA/Case HS) and Elizabeth Cignoli (Springfield, MA/Cathedral HS) fell to Jenna Williamson and Lauren Hopp, 8-4, while juniors Angela Pollard (Portsmouth, RI/Portsmouth HS) and Allison Furtado (Fairhaven, MA/Fairhaven HS) lost to Ashley Pereira and Brittney Hislop at number two, 8-0.
Furtado lost to Vautrin in a tie-breaker at number four singles, 6-4, 4-6, (10-6), while Cignoli led Hopp at number five singles, 3-2, when she became ill and had to retire.
"Bridgewater is a very good team, and they deserved to win today," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Ralph Perry. "There were some close matches. We did a good job, we had some tough breaks, but Bridgewater was the better team today."
The Corsairs lost for the first time this season, falling to 9-1 overall and 6-1 in the LEC, while the Bears improved to 9-2 and 7-0 in the Little East Conference with the victory. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Salem State Tuesday.
