Women's Tennis Ties for Second at Grass Court Doubles

NEWPORT, RI -- The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth women's tennis team tied for second in an eight-team field in their 2013 season opener at the College Grass Court Doubles Invitational Tournament at the International Tennis Hall of Fame Saturday.

UMass Dartmouth, Bridgewater State and Curry each scored six points. Holy Cross was first with 12 points. Assumption and Colby-Sawyer each had five points, Salve Regina had three and Johnson & Wales two.

The Corsairs' third doubles team of senior Casey Auman (North Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) and freshman Rosalie Kimba (Milford, MA/Milford HS) won twice before losing in the Flight C finals. In flight A, senior Nicole Pelletier (Swansea, MA/Case HS) and junior Hannah Schulze (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) won their first match, then lost in the semi-finals. In flight B, seniors Angela Pollard (Portsmouth, RI/Portsmouth HS) and Allison Furtado (Fairhaven, MA/Fairhaven HS) dropped their first two matches.

"We went into the last round in second place," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Doug Chapman. "It was a new experience for us, none of our people had played on grass before. We had varying levels of comfort. Casey Auman and Rosalie Kimba played very well, and Nicole Pelletier and Hannah Schulze played better as time went on. We did a good job, but I think we can play better than we did today."

The Corsairs will play their first dual match of the season when they host Wentworth Monday afternoon.
