Tie-Breakers Sink Women's Tennis Against Johnson & Wales

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA --The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth women's tennis team lost four tie-breakers, and fell to visiting Johnson & Wales, 8-1, in a non-conference match at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Thursday.

The Wildcats swept the doubles matches. At number one, senior Nicole Pelletier (Swansea, MA/Case HS) and junior Hannah Schulze (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) fell to junior Sammy Jo Borr (Westfield, NJ) and senior Ansley Sego (Naperville, IL), 9-8, losing the tie-breaker, 7-2. At number three, the Corsairs' duo of senior Casey Auman (North Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) and freshman Rosalie Kimba (Milford, MA/Milford HS) lost to junior Gabby Longo (Philadelphia, PA) and Emily Glass, 8-7.

Senior Angela Pollard (Portsmouth, RI/Portsmouth HS) was the only winner for the Corsairs, She defeated freshman Morgan Thompson (Fargo, ND) at number three singles, 1-6, 6-4, (10-8). At number two singles, Schulze lost to junior Stephanie Piperis (Yorktown Heights, NY), 6-2, 2-6, (10-8), while Auman lost to senior Victoria Ricciardi (Binghamton, NY) at number five singles, 6-4, 1-6, (11-9).

"The match was pretty well decided when we were down, 3-0, after the doubles," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Doug Chapman. "With a couple of breaks, we could have been ahead, 2-1. All the momentum was heading Johnson & Wales' way, and they won the first set in all singles matches, which put us into a huge hole. The positive is that we fought back in quite a few matches and took them to third set super-tiebreakers."

The Corsairs dropped to 1-1 with the defeat, while the Wildcats improved to 4-1 with the victory. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Plymouth State Saturday in the Little East Conference opener. Johnson & Wales will host Suffolk Saturday.
