NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. --The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth women's tennis team cruised to a 7-2 victory over visiting Plymouth in the Corsairs' Little East Conference opener at the at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Saturday.
Seniors Angela Pollard (Portsmouth, RI/Portsmouth HS), Allison Furtado (Fairhaven, MA/Fairhaven HS) and Elizabeth Cignoli (Springfield, MA/Cathedral HS) were each double-winners for the Corsairs. Pollard teamed with Furtado for a 8-2 win at number two doubles and then won her third singles match of the week, topping freshman Nikki Lund (Hingham, MA) 6-4, 7-5 at number three singles. Furtado defeated Panthers senior Chelsea Thibeault (Manchester, NH) 6-1, 6-2 at number four singles.
Cignoli, seeing her first action of the young season after returning from injury, teamed with freshman Rosalie Kimba (Milford, MA/Milford, HS) for a 8-3 victory over freshman Rachel Gustafson (Belchertown, MA) and sophomore Peyton Smith (Stuttgart, Germany) at number three doubles and then defeated junior Rosalie DiRado (Gansevoort, NY) 6-1, 6-2 at number six singles.
Plymouth State earned its points at number one doubles and number two singles. Sophomore Nitsa Ioannides (El Cajon, CA) and Lund defeated senior Nicole Pelletier (Swansea, MA/Joseph Case HS) and junior Hannah Schulze (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) in doubles, 8-3. Panthers senior Jane Duggan (Saunderstown, RI) rallied from a 2-5 deficit to top Schulze 7-5, 6-2.
Pelletier turned the tables and won the match-clinching decision over Ioannides 7-6 (7-3), 6-0. Senior Casey Auman (North Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) was a 6-1, 6-4 winner at fifth singles.
"After earning a 2-1 cushion in the doubles, we turned in a solid effort in singles despite the windy conditions," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Doug Chapman. "It is always nice to win your conference opener."
The Corsairs improved to 2-1 with the victory, while the Panthers dropped to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the LEC. UMass Dartmouth will return to action
Tuesday when they travel to Providence to face 7-0 Rhode Island College in the Little East Conference
match. Plymouth State gets back to action on Sunday, hosting Johnson State.
