NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's tennis team won two of the three doubles matches and defeated visiting Johnson & Wales, 6-3, in the 2010 season opener for both teams at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Saturday.
Freshmen Nicole Pelletier (Swansea, MA/Case HS) and Elizabeth Cignoli (Springfield, MA/Cathedral HS) put UMass Dartmouth ahead, 2-0, when they came back from a 6-3 deficit to defeat sophomore Tammy Saunders (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Catholic HS) and freshman Steph Roberti (Port Jefferson, NY/Earl Vandermellan HS), 9-8, winning the tie-breaker, 8-6. At third doubles, JWU juniors Laura Schwenk (Ottumwa, IA/Ottumwa HS) and Dana Trimborn (North Wales, PA/Lansdale HS) defeated the Corsair team of freshman Allison Furtado (Fairhaven, MA/Fairhaven HS) and senior Amber Umbertini (Dalton, MA/Wahconah HS), 9-8, winning their tie-breaker, 7-5.
Senior Amy Lopes (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) gave UMD a 3-1 lead when she defeated Roberti at number one singles, 6-2, 6-0. Pelletier downed freshman Vicky Ricciardi (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton HS) at number two singles, 6-0, 6-0, and Cignoli clinched the win when she defeated Saunders at number three, 6-2, 6-1. "It was a good start for us," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Ralph Perry. "Amy sparked us, winning both of her matches, and our number two doubles team came back from a 6-3 deficit to win in a tie-breaker. Our number three doubles team, which lost in a tie-breaker, also played well. Our three freshmen all did a good job, and it was a nice win."
Lopes and Fiorita combined to defeat Ricciardi and freshman Ashley Seso (Naperville, IL/Naperville HS) at number one singles, 8-3.
The Corsairs improved to 1-0 with the victory, while the Wildcats dropped to 0-1 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Southern Maine next Saturday. JWU will visit Bridgewater State Tuesday.
