The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's tennis team won all three doubles matches and went on to defeat visiting Plymouth State, 7-2, in a Little East Conference match at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Saturday.
Senior Amy Lopes (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) was a double winner for the Corsairs, defeating sophomore Sara Burke (Barrington, RI/Barrington HS) at number one singles, 6-4, 6-2, and teaming with junior Alexa Fiorita (Reading, MA/Reading HS) to down Burke and junior Laura Donovan (Acton, MA/Acton Boxborough HS) at number one doubles, 8-3. Freshman Elizabeth Cignoli (Springfield, MA/Cathedral HS) downed sophomore Rachel Figura (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire HS) at number three singles, 6-4, 3-6, (10-6), and combined with freshman Nicole Pelletier (Swansea, MA/Case HS) to defeat Figura and junior Lydia Smith (Marblehead, MA/Marblehead HS) at number two doubles, 8-4.
"I was very impressed with the play of our freshman, and Amy played super," said UMass Dartmouth Men's Head Coach Tom Mendell, who substituted for Women's Head Coach Ralph Perry, who was out of town. "Our doubles teams played very well and they were aggressive, and we played well in a difficult league match."
The Corsairs improved to 3-0 and 2-0 in the LEC with the victory, while the Panthers dropped to 3-1 and 2-1 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit UMass Boston Tuesday. Plymouth State will host Castleton State Wednesday.
