DANBURY, CT-Host Western Connecticut won a pair of crucial doubles matches and held off the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's tennis team, 6-3, in a Little East Conference match at the Westside Courts Saturday
Leading 4-2 after the singles, which were played first, the Colonials got a victory at number one doubles from Lauren Post and Alyssa Hoynack, who defeated junior Alexa Fiorita (Reading, MA/Reading HS) and freshman Nicole Pelletier (Swansea, MA/Case HS), 8-6. At number two doubles, freshmen Elizabeth Cignoli (Springfield, MA/Cathedral HS) and senior Amber Ubertini (Dalton, MA/Wahconah HS) fell to Ashley Gorelick and Ali Mahony, 9-7, while at number three doubles, freshmen Angela Pollard (Portsmouth, RI/Portsmouth HS) and Allison Furtado (Fairhaven, MA/ Fairhaven HS) defeated Maxx Zimmer and Liza Zanderigo, 8-2.
In singles, UMass Dartmouth got victories from senior Blair Dalrymple (North Attleboro, MA/North Attleboro HS), who defeated Gorelick at number four, 6-1, 6-3; and Pollard, who downed Debbie Ferreira at number six, 6-1, 6-3.
"It came down to the doubles, and when third doubles finished, it was 4-3," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Ralph Perry. "Our first doubles team played a great match against their number one and two players and almost pulled it out. Blair played an excellent match at number four, and so did Angela at number six. It was a tough loss."
The Corsairs dropped to 4-1 and 3-1 in the LEC with the victory, while the Colonials dropped to 5-1 and 3-0 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Worcester State Tuesday.
