WORCESTER, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's tennis team lost only a single set and blanked host Worcester State, 9-0, in a Little East Conference match at Clark University's Corash Tennis Courts Tuesday.
Sophomore Nicole Pelletier (Swansea, MA/Case HS) and senior Courtney Morey (Mashpee, MA/Mashpee HS) defeated Traylor Tomasetti and Danielle Candelarie at number one doubles, 8-2. At number two, sophomores Angela Pollard (Portsmouth, RI/Portsmouth HS) and sophomore Allison Furtado (Fairhaven, MA/Fairhaven HS) downed Brooke Michanczyk and Laura Sarkis, 8-4. At number three, freshman Hannah Schulze (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) and junior Liz Girczyc(Attleboro, MA/Attleboro HS) defeated Erin Desmarais and Lisa Higgins, 8-3.
Pelletier defeated Tomasetti at number one singles, 6-1, 6-0; Morey downed Candelarie at number two, 6-3, 2-6, (10-8), Pollard defeated Michanczyk at number three, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4; Furtado downed Sarkis at number four, 7-5, 6-0; Schulze defeated Desmarais at number five, 7-5, 6-0; and Schulze downed Amy Mach at number six, 6-0, 6-3.
"We played well, it was a good effort," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Ralph Perry. "Nicole was outstanding at first singles, Liz played well at sixth singles, and some of other people came back after they were down. They showed good fortitude."
The Corsairs improved to 4-1 and 3-0 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while the Lancers dropped to 2-4 and 0-2 in the LEC with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Johnson & Wales Thursday.
