NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Sophomore Kelsey Grossmann (Holliston, MA/Holliston HS) won the deciding match at number three singles as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's tennis team edged visiting Bridgewater State, 5-4, in a Little East Conference match at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Saturday afternoon.
Grossmann defeated senior Catarina Rosa (Fall River, MA/Bishop Connolly HS) in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, giving the Corsairs their fifth point and clinching the match.
The Bears won two of the three doubles matches, but junior Lauren Donnelly (Centerville, MA/Barnstable HS) had to retire from her number one singles match against junior Amy Lopes (Dartmouth, Dartmouth HS) of the Corsairs, allowing UMD to tie the match at 2-2. Junior Amber Ubertini (Dalton, MA/Wahconah HS) defeated junior Rachel Elman (Rehoboth, MA/Dighton-Rehoboth HS) at number two singles, 6-4, 6-4, but junior Jessica Francis (West Barnstable, MA/Barnstable HS) of the Bears downed sophomore Courtney Morey (Mashpee, MA/Mashpee HS) at number five, 7-5, 6-4. Freshman Juliet Levangie (Middleboro, MA/Coyle Cassidy HS) defeated sophomore Julie Kraby (Wrentham. MA/King Philip Regional HS) at number six singles, 6-1, 7-6 (7-2), setting up Grossman's decisive victory.
"The match between Kelsey and Catarina Rosa at third singles was a hard fought match, and Kelsey came through," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Ralph Perry. "Overall, the match could have gone either way, and both teams showed a lot of heart today. Julie came through at sixth singles, and Amber played extremely well in winning her singles match."
The Corsairs improved to 7-3 and 4-2 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while the Bears dropped to 9-2 and 4-2 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit MCLA Monday. BSC will host Curry Wednesday.
