NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Senior Day was an artistic success, as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's tennis team didn't lose a set in defeating visiting MCLA, 9-0, in a non-conference match at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Monday.
Three Corsairs were double winners. Senior Amy Lopes (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) teamed with junior Alexa Fiorita (Reading, MA/Reading HS) to defeat junior Carrie Richards (Ludlow, MA/Ludlow HS) and sophomore Emily Minns (Gardner, MA/Gardner HS) at number one doubles, 8-2, and then defeated Richards at number one singles, 6-1, 6-0. Senior Amber Ubertini (Dalton, MA/Wahconah HS) combined with senior Melissa Caulkins (Hopedale, MA/Hopedale HS) to down sophomores Shelby Ferriere (Columbia HS) and Darcy Burgos (Lawrence, MA/Lawrence HS) at number three doubles, 8-0, and defeated sophomore Hannah Marshman (Monohasen HS) at number four singles, 6-0, 6-0. Freshman Angela Pollard (Portsmouth, RI/Portsmouth HS) teamed with freshman Allison Furtado (Fairhaven, MA/Fairhaven HS) to defeat Marshman and sophomore Laura Laureano (Lawrence, MA/Lawrence HS) at number two doubles, 8-0, and defeated sophomore Jessica Guay (Gateway HS) at number five singles, 6-0, 6-0.
"We sailed through it pretty well, and Amy led the way," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Ralph Perry. "Our team played extremely well, and we were missing a few people and moved some others up, and everyone came through."
The Corsairs improved to 6-1 with the victory, while the Trailblazers dropped to 1-9 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Newbury Tuesday. MCLA will host Castleton State Thursday.
