NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-For the second consecutive day, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's tennis team didn't lose a set in defeating visiting Newbury, 9-0, in a non-conference match at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Monday.
Four Corsairs were double winners. Freshman Nicole Pelletier (Swansea, MA/Case HS) defeated sophomore Jennifer Swafford (Merrimack, NH/Merrimack HS) at number one singles, 6-0, 6-0, freshman Elizabeth Cignoli (Springfield, MA/Cathedral HS) defeated junior Kristen Connors (Riverside, RI/East Providence HS) at number two, 6-2, 6-0, and Pelletier and Cignoli combined to defeat Conners and senior Stephanie Valentine (Pleasant Valley, CT/St. Paul Catholic HS) at number one doubles, 8-0. Freshman Angela Pollard (Portsmouth, RI/Portsmouth HS) downed sophomore Julie MacLeod (Buffalo, NY/Frontier Senior HS) at number five singles, 6-0, 6-0, and senior Amber Ubertini (Dalton, MA/Wahconah HS) defeated freshman Stephanie Ruffin (Waltham, MA/Waltham HS) at number six singles, 6-0, 6-0. Pollard teamed with freshman Allison Furtado (Fairhaven, MA/Fairhaven HS) to defeat Swafford and sophomore Alexandra Derderian at number two doubles, 8-4, while Ubertini combined with sophomore Liz Girczyc (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro HS) to defeat MacLeod and Ruffin at number three doubles, 8-0.
"I was pleased with the way our team came out and played today," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Ralph Perry. "It was a good team effort all the way down the line for us."
The Corsairs improved to 7-1 with the victory, while the Nighthawks dropped to 4-9 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Becker Wednesday. Newbury will host UMass Boston Thursday.
