NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's tennis team won five of the six singles matches and went on to defeat visiting Worcester State, 8-1, in a Little East Conference match at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Friday. The win moved UMD into a first place tie in the Little East Conference with one match remaining.
Senior Amber Ubertini (Dalton, MA/Wahconah HS) and freshman Allison Furtado (Fairhaven, MA/Fairhaven HS) each won twice for the Corsairs. Ubertini defeated freshman Brooke Michanczyk (Middletown, CT/Middletown HS) at number five singles, 6-2, 6-4, and combined with senior Daniela Joggi (Stoneham, MA/Stoneham HS) to down senior Courtney Blais (Paxton, MA/Worcester Academy) and sophomore Jackie Shaw (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge HS) at number one doubles, 8-4. Furtado was victorious against sophomore Erin Desmarais (Gardner, MA/Gardner HS) at number six singles, 6-3, 6-1, and teamed with sophomore Liz Girczyc (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro HS) to defeat Desmarais and Michanczyk at number three doubles, 9-7. Freshman Nicole Pelletier (Swansea, MA/Case HS) downed sophomore Marissa Boss (Holden, MA/Wachusett HS) at number one singles, 6-0, 6-2; while freshman Angela Pollard defeated Shaw at number four singles, 6-1, 6-0.
"Nicole and Allison got us started out in singles, and we got on a roll," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Ralph Perry. "We played well in singles, and we kept it going in doubles by winning all three of the doubles matches. We played well under adverse, windy conditions. Angela Pollard played well, playing two spots higher than she usually does and defeating a good player in Jackie Shaw."
The Corsairs improved to 10-1 and 6-1 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while the Lancers dropped to 5-8 and 1-7 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Rhode Island College Saturday. Worcester State will host Wentworth Saturday.
