NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Freshman Nicole Pelletier (Swansea, MA/Case HS) of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth women's tennis team has been honored by the Little East Conference.
Pelletier has been named Little East Conference Women's Tennis Rookie of the Week.
Pelletier won both of her matches Saturday as the Corsairs opened their season with a 6-3 win against Johnson & Wales. She teamed with fellow freshman Elizabeth Cignoli (Springfield, MA/Cathedral HS) to defeat Tammy Saunders and Steph Roberti at number two doubles, overcoming a 6-3 deficit and winning the tie-breaker, 8-6. She then defeated Vicky Ricciardi at number two singles, 6-0, 6-0.
"For her first collegiate varsity match, Nicole came in with good poise and confidence, and it showed," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Ralph Perry. "She was well-trained in high school, having been coached by Paul Cote (father of Megan Cote, the number one singles player at Salem State). Against Johnson & Wales, she and Elizabeth Cignoli came back and won in doubles, and then Nicole won in singles. Both Nicole and Elizabeth showed good skills and good confidence, and I'm looking forward to what they will do for the rest of the season."
UMass Dartmouth will take a 1-0 record into Saturday's match against Southern Maine.
