Oct. 22, 2009

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA- Turnabout was fair play for the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's tennis team in their first round Little East Conference Tournament match against visiting Rhode Island College Thursday afternoon at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex.

The Corsairs, who fell victim to a RIC comeback in Tuesday's 5-4 loss, rallied to win four singles matches and defeated the Anchorwomen, 5-3. The match was ended as soon as it was decided.

UMass Dartmouth, which won two of three doubles matches, trailed after Thursday's doubles play, 2-1. Junior Amy Lopes (Dartmouth, MA) evened the score by defeating senior Julie Bannon (Narragansett, RI/ Narragansett HS) at number one singles, 6-0, 6-2, and junior Blair Dalrymple (North Attleboro, MA/North Attleboro HS) downed junior Brittany LaBarre (Greenville, RI/Smithfield HS) at number four singles, 6-1, 6-4, giving the Corsairs a 3-2 advantage. The Anchorwomen promptly tied the match when freshman Marissa Langellier (Greenville, RI/Smithfield HS) downed sophomore Courtney Morey (Mashpee, MA/Mashpee HS) at number five singles, 6-4, 6-3.

Sophomore Kelsey Grossmann (Holliston, MA/Holliston HS) broke the tie when she defeated sophomore Gabriela Batek (Greenville, RI/Smithfield HS) at number three singles, 7-5, 6-0; then junior Amber Ubertini clinched the win when she downed junior Jaclyn Eastman (Mansfield, MA/Mansfield HS), 6-0, 7-6, winning the second set tie-breaker by a 7-1 score.

"The pressure was on Amber today, and she was up to the task," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Ralph Perry. "I have to give credit to Coach (Liz) Barrette and RIC, they came to play. We played well. Blair and Kelsey came back to win matches that they had lost on Tuesday. It was a good win for us against a good Rhode Island College team."

The Corsairs improved to 9-4 with the victory, while the Anchorwomen dropped to 10-6 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth advances to a semi-final match at top-seeded Western Connecticut State Saturday at 12 noon. The match was the final competition of the season for Rhode Island College.
