Three Earn LEC Women's Track and Field Honors
Freshman Jessica Masse
NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Three members of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's track and field team were honored by the Little East Conference on the final week of awards for the 2011 spring season.
Senior Eric Nygaard (Medway, MA/Medway HS) was named LEC Men's Track Athlete of the Week, freshman Jessica Masse (Somerville, MA/Somerville HS) was named LEC Women's Field Athlete of the Week, and freshman Joe Texeira (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk HS) was named LEC Men's Rookie Field Athlete of the Week. All three were honored for their performances at last weekend's Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships at Moravian College.
At 1500 meters, Nygaard finished fifth overall in 3:54.11. He narrowly missed the NCAA Division III provisional qualifying mark while posting the fastest 1500 time of his career, and the second best ever at UMass Dartmouth.
"Eric Nygaard capped an outstanding career with his personal best time of 3:54.11," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve Gardiner. "We are very pleased to have had the privilege of working with Eric and are so glad that he was able to end his college career with a three second personal record. Eric left a lasting impression on the UMass Dartmouth track and field program."
In the shot put, Masse finished in second place, breaking the outdoor school record with a mark of 41 feet, six inches. Masse, who was in fourth place after her first three throws in the trials, had her best throw on her second of three attempts in the finals, lifting her into second place.
"Jessica Masse unloaded her all-time best outdoor throw to finish second at the ECACs, and punctuate what has been an outstanding freshman season for her," said Gardiner. "Jessica has continued to improve throughout the spring season and this performance at the ECACs is a great way for her to conclude her first collegiate season. We are looking forward to what she accomplishes in the future at UMass Dartmouth."
In the men's javelin, Texeira finished ninth overall at 182 feet, six inches. "Joe Texeira completed his freshman year with an impressive performance at the ECACs by making the final and finishing ninth overall," said Gardiner. "He has established himself as one of the premier freshman javelin throwers in Division III. He is a very passionate and competitive athlete, and we are excited to have him in our program."
