NEW LONDON, CT-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's outdoor track and field team swept the competition at the Silfen Invitational at the Silfen Track Saturday.
Both teams finished first in a 12-team field. The women had 121 points to second place Connecticut College's 117.33, while the men scored 175, outdistancing second place Coast Guard, which had 156.
For the women, freshman Katie Sheehan (Scituate, MA/Scituate HS) and junior Jillian Van Ness (Agawam, MA/Agawam HS) each won twice. Sheehan set a school record in winning the 3000 meter steeplechase in 12:01.38, and turned in the fourth best time at UMass Dartmouth when she won the 400 meter hurdles in 68.64 seconds. Van Ness won at 100 meters in 12.66 seconds, and at 200 in 26.25.
Sophomore Jessica Masse (Somerville, MA/Somerville HS) won the shot put with a toss of 39 feet, 8 1/4 inches, senior Brittany Cole (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) was third in the shot put at 35-8 1/4, third in the hammer at 133-6 (the fifth best throw at UMD) and was fourth in the discus at 109-5 (the 10th best throw for the Corsairs). Freshman Bailey Burke (South Yarmouth, MA/Dennis-Yarmouth HS) was fourth in the hammer at 124 feet, the sixth best throw at UMD.
In the javelin, senior Emily Migre (Whitman, MA/Whitman-Hanson HS) was third at 102-11, senior Courtney Testa's (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton HS) second place finish at 1500 meters (4:53.23) was the eighth best finish at UMD, senior Megan Oliveira (Somerset, MA/Somerset HS) was eighth at 800 meters in 2:31.98, junior Jamie Zizza (Stoneham, MA/Stoneham HS) was fourth in the pole vault at 7-6 1/2 and sixth in the high jump at 4-7, freshman Mary Shaw (Conway, MA/Frontier Regional HS) was sixth in the pole vault at 7-0 1/2, and sophomore Caitlin Dorr (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro HS) was fifth in the high jump at 4-9. The 4 x 100 meter relay team of sophomore Lauren Roche (Norfolk, MA/King Philip Regional HS), Van Ness, junior Morgan Cooper (Sunderland, MA/Frontier Regional HS) and sophomore Isabel Pierre (Port-au-Prince, Haiti/West Roxbury HS) was third in 52.10 seconds, while the 4 x 400 meter relay team of Dorr, Oliveira, freshman Leslie Martin (Pittsfield, MA/Pittsfield HS) and Cooper was fourth in 4:29.5.
For the men, freshman Phito Gondre (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) won at 100 meters in 11.04 (the third best time at UMD) and at 200 meters (the best time recorded by a Corsair runner). Sophomore Chris Perry (Providence, RI/Dighton-Rehoboth HS/Bristol CC) won the long jump at 21-10 3/4 and the triple jump at 45-7 1/4 and was fourth at 100 meters in 11.45 seconds and was fourth at 200 meters in 23.21 seconds. Senior Hymlaire Lamisere (Newton, MA/Newton North HS/Iona) was fifth at 100 meters in 11.50 seconds.
In the long jump, freshman Jon Williams (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) was second at 19-11 1/2. Freshman Adam Jones (Amesbury, MA/Triton Regional HS) was fifth in the triple jump at 41-7 3/4 and seventh in the high jump at 6-2, while freshman Aaron Amado (Randolph, MA/Thayer Academy) was sixth in the triple jump at 41-6 1/2 and fourth in the high jump at 6-2.
In the javelin, sophomore Joe Texeira (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk HS) was first at 186 feet, sophomore Chris Jordan (Taunton, MA/Taunton HS) was fifth at 159-9 and Kainoa Culverhouse (Salisbury, MA/Triton Regional HS) was sixth at 158-3. Freshman Jacob Texeira (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk HS) was second in the 400 meter hurdles in 55.97 seconds, the ninth best mark at UMD, while sophomore Kyle Costa (Somerset, MA/Somerset HS/Vermont) was fifth in 59.)3 seconds. Jordan was second in the 3000 meter steeplechase in 10:53.50.
Senior Robert Yarbough (Fall River, MA/Durfee HS) won the hammer at 158 feet, was third in the shot put at 44-2 1/2, and sixth in the discus at 121-3. Freshman Cody Lusas (Melrose, MA/Melrose HS) was fifth in the discus with a collegiate-best toss of 124 feet, and seventh in the shot put at 41-2 1/2. Freshman Matt Ferro (Halifax, MA/Silver Lake HS) was fifth at 800 meters in 1:58.80, sophomore Matt Hinthorne (Braintree, MA/Braintree HS) was fourth at 400 meters in 50.79 seconds and junior Gerald Arneaud (Dorchester, MA/Newton South HS) was sixth in 51.50 seconds. The 4 x 100 meter relay team of Lamisere, Perry, Culverhouse and Gondre was first in 43.45 seconds, while the 4 x 400 meter relay team of Hinthorne, Ferro, Costa and sophomore Zach Switaj (Tamworth, NH/Kennett Regional HS) was second in 3:30.13.
"I was very pleased that both teams won," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve Gardiner. "It's the first time the women have won an invitational at a track other than our own. We had some people get themselves back on track, we did some things a bit differently today to find out things for next week, and hopefully, we'll be ready for the conference meet."
The Corsairs will return to action at the Little East Conference and New England Alliance Championships at Westfield State next Saturday.
