NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Two members of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's outdoor track and field team have been honored by the Little East Conference.
Senior Robert Yarbough (Fall River, MA/Durfee HS) has been named Men's Field Athlete of the Week, and sophomore Krista Chauvin (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk HS/Stonehill) was named Women's Field Athlete of the Week.
Chauvin finished third in the hammer throw at the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III Championships Thursday with a school record toss of 177 feet, one inch. The throw beat her own school record by nearly 13 feet, and moved her from 22nd to seventh place nationally, allowing her to qualify for this week's NCAA Division III Championships. Friday, she finished ninth in the discus at 128 feet, eight inches.
Yarbough finished fourth in the shot put at Friday's ECAC Championships with a mark of 52 feet, 3 1/4 inches, breaking the school record in the process. It was his first throw that was over 50 feet. Thursday, he finished fourth in the hammer with a toss of 179-10, the second best throw ever at UMass Dartmouth.
"Krista has really improved week to week," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve Gardiner. "She had a career best throw in the hammer, which catapulted her into the number seven seed for the upcoming national meet. It was a great way for Rob to complete his outdoor career at UMass Dartmouth, with a personal best in the hammer and the shot and a school record performance in the shot put. It was a fitting end to an outstanding career."
Chauvin will represent UMass Dartmouth at this weekend's NCAA Division III Championships at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in Southern California. .
