Three Earn Little East Conference Track and Field Awards
Junior Jillian Van Ness
NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Three members of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's indoor track and field team have been honored by the Little East Conference for their performances at Saturday's Tufts Invitational.
Sophomore Matt Hinthorne (Braintree, MA/Braintree HS) was named LEC Men's Track Athlete of the Week, sophomore Chris Perry (Providence, RI/Dighton-Rehoboth HS/BCC) was named LEC Men's Field Athlete of the Week, and junior Jillian Van Ness (Agawam, MA/Agawam HS) was named LEC Women's Track Athlete of the Week.
Hinthorne broke the school record when he finished first at 600 meters in 1:23.02, which allowed him to qualify for the New England Open Championships. He also was a member of the victorious 4 x 800 meter relay team, which finished first in 8:01.22.
Perry finished first in the long jump, qualifying for the Eastern College Athletic Conference championship with a leap of 22-3 1/4. He was also fifth in the 60 meter dash in 7.17 seconds, and fourth at 200 meters in 23.11 seconds.
Van Ness broke the school record when she finished second at 60 meters in 7.87 seconds, the 14th fastest time in Division III this season. She was also a member of the 4 x 200 meter relay team, which finished second in a school record time of 1:48.53.
"The Tufts meet was a breakthrough for Jillian in the dash," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve Gardiner. "She's worked extremely hard throughout her career here, and it's gratifying to see her hard work pay off. In Matt's case, his teammate (sophomore) Kyle Costa (Somerset, MA/Somerset HS/Vermont) should get some credit for going out at a fast pace and helping set Matt up for a school record performance. Matt's rounding into shape in time for the most important meet of the season. In a pit not noted for rendering great performances, Chris had a great series of 22 foot jumps as we took a break from the triple jump this season to focus on the long jump."
The Corsairs will return to action when they travel to Southern Maine for the Little East Conference and New England Alliance Championships this Saturday.
