GORHAM, ME - The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's track and field team performed well at the New England Division III Championships at the University of Southern Maine's Costello Sports Complex Saturday.
Junior Krista Chauvin (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk HS/Stonehill) extended her school record when she finished third in the weight throw at 53 feet, which was another personal best. She also threw the shot put 37 feet, three inches.
The 4 x 200 meter relay team finished third, just behind Rhode Island College at 1:45.68 with a team of freshman LaQuaysha Anderson-Jenkins (Brighton, MA/Brighton HS), freshman Barbara Okafor (Hyde Park, MA/Boston Latin HS), freshman Michele-Le Meranda (Somerville, MA/Somerville HS) and senior Jill Van Ness (Agawam, MA/Agawam HS). Meranda was 13th overall at 400 meters in 61.52 seconds; Anderson-Jenkins was 10th at 200 meters in 26.58 seconds, a race in which Van Ness ran 26.92 seconds. In the 55 meter dash, Van Ness ran 7.50 seconds, Okafor 7.54 and Anderson-Jenkins 7.62, while sophomore Bailey Burke (South Yarmouth, MA/Dennis-Yarmouth HS) threw 39-2 in the weight throw.
"We only brought six people, and they did well," said UMass Dartmouth Assistant Coach Jon Hird, who accompanied the group. "It was a very satisfied group. They felt good about what they did."
The Corsairs will return to action at the Open New England Championships at Boston University next weekend.
