SPRINGFIELD, MA—One school record fell and another Corsair placed as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's track and field team completed their second and final day of competition at the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships at Springfield's Blake Track.
Sophomore Jake Texeira (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk HS) placed seventh in the 400 meter intermediate hurdles in 54.17 seconds. Senior Gerald Arneaud (Dorchester, MA/Newton South HS) finished ninth at 400 meters and broke his own school record, with a time of 48.99 seconds.
The 4 x 100 meter relay team of freshman Barbara Okafor (Hyde Park, MA/Boston Latin HS), senior Jillian Van Ness (Agawam, MA/Agawam HS), freshman Laquaysia Anderson-Jenkins (Brighton, MA/Brighton HS), and senior Morgan Cooper (Sunderland, MA/Frontier Regional HS) placed ninth in 48.94 seconds.
Anderson-Jenkins was 14th at 200 meters in 25.47 seconds, the second fastest time in school history and just two-hundredths of a second off Van Ness' school record. Van Ness was 17th in 25.55 and was 16th at 400 meters in 59.01 seconds. Cooper was 24th at 400 meters in 59.71 seconds. Junior Zach Switaj (Tamworth, NH/Kennett Regional HS) was 20th at 1500 meters in 3:59.93, while freshman Grunde Brandso (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) fouled on his throws in the shot put and did not receive a mark.
"It was a good performance," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve Gardiner. "I was really glad to see Gerald break the 49 second mark in his last meet, that's something he always wanted to do. Jake Texeira has had a really consistent year. To be on either side of 54 seconds in every meet is something to be proud of."
Junior Krista Chauvin (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk HS/Stonehill), who has the top-ranked hammer throw in the nation, could be joined by one or two Corsairs at next week's NCAA Division III Championships. Junior Brett Croteau (Rehoboth, MA/Dighton-Rehoboth HS) is currently ranked 17th nationally in the javelin, while Texeira currently stands 25th in the 400 hurdles. The field will be released Monday, and the championships take place next Thursday through Saturday at the University of Wisconsin-Lacrosse.
