NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth women's track and field team placed third at the 2014 Little East Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday afternoon. UMass Dartmouth hosted the championships at their home track.
The Corsairs combined for 94.5 points, finishing between UMass Boston (92) and Keene State (104). Southern Maine dominated the field and captured the Little East title with a score of 185.5.
Junior Bailey Burke (South Yarmouth, Mass.) earned 14 points for UMass Dartmouth in the hammer throw and discus events. Burke recorded a second place distance of 41.86 meters in the hammer and a third place toss of 33.73 meters in the discus.
In the javelin, Ashley Motta grabbed third with a heave of 33.95 meters. Senior Ezra Banks (Roxbury, Mass.) propelled herself 10.76 meters in the triple jump to earn second place, while junior Meghan Cutler (Attleboro, Mass.) cleared the bar at 1.52 meters (4-11.75) in the high jump for third.
All three of the Corsair relay teams finished in the top three as the 4x100 team placed in second (48.96) and the 4x400 and 4x800 teams each took third with times of 4:13.55 and 10:29.92. In the 400 meter dash, sophomore Summer Jones (East Bridgewater, Mass.) covered the distance in 59.09 seconds to grab eight points for UMass Dartmouth, while sophomore Michel-Le Miranda (Somerville, Mass.) and freshman Meagan Shurtleff (Dartmouth, Mass.) took second and third in the 400 meter hurdles.
UMass Dartmouth returns to action on Friday, May 2, when the Corsairs kick off Day 1 of the 2014 New England Div. III Championships in Springfield, Mass.
