Corsairs Break Records At Tufts Invitational

MEDFORD, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's indoor track and field team turned in some strong performances and broke a couple of school records at the Tufts Invitational at the Gantcher Center Saturday. There were no team scores at the meet.

At 600 meters, senior Eric Nygaard (Medway, MA/Medway HS) broke the school record when he finished second in 1:23.97. Sophomore Matt Hinthorne (Braintree, MA/Braintree HS) also broke the school record when he was third in 1:23.98, while sophomore Scott Connolly (Sharon, MA/Sharon HS) finished eighth in 1:25.26.

Freshman Ezra Banks (Boston, MA/Newton South HS) broke her own school record in the 60 meter dash. She broke it in the trials when she ran 8.03 seconds, then broke it once more when she finished first in 7.97 seconds. She finished one-tenth of a second off the provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA Division III Championships.

Other highlights for the women included the 600, in which sophomore Kim Urena (Marlborough, MA/ Marlborough HS) finished fourth in 1:40.89. In the 200, sophomore Jillian Van Ness (Agawam, MA/Agawam HS) was seventh in 27.32 seconds. Junior Meagan Bohigian (Barre, MA/Quabbin Regional HS) was 14th in the mile in a personal best time of 5:34.07, freshman Jessica Masse (Somerville, MA/Somerville HS) was third in the shot put at 37 feet, one inch, while junior Brittany Cole (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) was sixth at 35-7 3/4 and was 12th in the weight throw with a personal best 36 feet, 1/4 inch. At 3000 meters, freshman Courtney Testa (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton HS) was eighth in 11:01.23.

For the men, junior Hymlaire Lamisere (Newton, MA/Newton North/Iona).was seventh at 50 meters in 7.1 seconds, and freshman Chris Perry (Attleboro, MA/Dighton-Rehoboth HS/BCC) was eighth in 7.24 seconds. At 200 meters, graduate student Corey Sleep (Fall River, MA/Durfee HS) was ninth in 23.72 seconds. Senior Steve Burke (Norwell, MA/Norwell HS) was 5th at 3000 meters in 8:59.53, freshman Brandon Higgins (Wareham MA/Upper Cape Cod Regional Vo Tech HS) was second in the high jump at 6-5, junior Robert Yarbough (Fall River, MA/ Durfee HS) was second in the shot put at 45 feet, 1 3/4 inches and fifth in the weight throw at 48-2, and freshman Chris Cole (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) was ninth in the shot put at 43-8.

The 4 x 200 meter relay team of Perry, sophomore Jesse Perrin (Somerset, MA/Somerset HS), Sleep and Lamisere was third in 1:34.52, the 4 x 4 team of Connolly, sophomore Kyle Costa (Somerset, MA/Somerset HS/Vermont), freshman Zach Switaj (Tamworth, NH/Kennett Regional HS) and Hinthorne was third in 3:33.34, and the 4 x 8 team of graduate student Tyler Buck (Valley Center, CA/Valley Center HS), Nygaard, Burke and sophomore Matt Ford (Pembroke, MA/Pembroke HS) was third in 8:19.70.

"We moved some people around in some events, and we rested some people, we used this meet to get ready for conference next week," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve Gardiner. "We've had a really good January and start of February, and we're looking forward to the conference meet next week at Southern Maine."

The Corsairs will return to action at the Little East Conference and New England Alliance Championships at Southern Maine next Saturday.
