BOSTON, MA-Four members of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's indoor track and field team scored and two more school records fell on the second and final day of action at the two-day Open New England Championships at the Boston University Track and Tennis Center Saturday.
Senior Eric Nygaard (Medway, MA/Medway HS), who broke the school record at 1000 meters Friday night, broke the UMass Dartmouth indoor mile record Saturday when he finished seventh in 4:15.24. Meanwhile, sophomore Matt Hinthorne (Braintree, MA/Braintree HS) broke the school record at 500 meters for the second time in two days, finishing sixth in 1:04.50 after qualifying in 1:04.99 Friday.
Freshman Chris Perry (Attleboro, MA/Dighton-Rehoboth HS/BCC) finished third in the triple jump a 48 feet, ½ inch. Freshman Brandon Higgins (Wareham, MA/Upper Cape Cod Regional Vo Tech HS) tied for eighth in the high jump at 6-4, and freshman Jessica Masse (Somerville, MA/Somerville HS) in the shot put finished 14th in the shot put with a throw of 39 feet, 1 ¾ inches.
"Having four people score in a meet like this is quite a performance, and it shows the progress we've made," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve Gardiner. "We broke two more school records this weekend, and we've set eight school records this winter, which is an amazing total since there are only 18 events. Jessica didn't have her best throw of the season today, but she was one of the top 12 throwers in New England coming into the meet, and to be in that category as a freshman is quite an accomplishment on her part."
The Corsairs will return to action at the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships next weekend.
