Track Does Well at Jay Carisella Invitational

BOSTON, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's track and field team turned in a strong performance in their season opener, the Jay Carisella Track and Field Invitational, hosted by Northeastern at the Reggie Lewis Center Saturday.
The Corsairs qualified 14 student-athletes for the New England Division III Championships on their first weekend of action.
Freshman Paul Grafov (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) qualified for both the New England Division III Championships and the ECAC Championships when he ran 400 meters in 50.69 seconds. He was 10th overall and was the top freshman finisher in the event. The Corsairs placed three in the 55 meter hurdles. Junior Nick Deininger (North Attleboro, MA/North Attleboro HS) finished fourth in 8.17 seconds, sophomore Brian McArdle (Winchester, MA/Winchester HS) was fifth in 8.18, and junior James Morgan (Stoneham, MA/ Stoneham HS/Assumption) finished eighth in 8.37 seconds. In the triple jump, junior Kevin Markie (North Attleboro, MA/North Attleboro HS/Nichols) was third with a jump of 43 feet, five inches, while senior Corey Sleep (Fall River, MA/Durfee HS) was sixth in 40 feet, 9 ¾ inches. In the 55 meter dash, sophomore Hymlaire Lamisere (Newton, MA/Newton North HS/Iona) was ninth in 6.69 seconds, freshman Kaylin Miranda (Brighton, MA/O'Bryant HS) was seventh in the long jump at 21 feet, nine inches, sophomore Robert Yarbough (Fall River, MA/Durfee HS) was ninth in the shot put at 45 feet, 3 ½ inches, and sophomore Kevin Gilmore (Hanson, MA/Whitman-Hanson Regional HS) ran the 5000 meters in 15:28.89. All qualified for the New England Division III Championships, with freshman Chris Harney (Mansfield, MA/Mansfield HS) just missing after finishing the 1000 meters in 2:38.54
For the women, junior Jermai Harrison qualified for the New England Division III Championships, finishing sixth in the shot put with a throw of 38 feet, four inches. Other qualifiers included sophomore Caitlin McGarigal (Shutesbury, MA/Amherst-Pelham Regional HS) was 11th at 3000 meters in 10:58.19, sophomore Megan Oliveira (Somerset, MA/ Somerset HS) was ninth at 1000 meters in 3:12.61, junior) Linee Mello-Frost (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) ran 55 meters in 8.94 seconds, and freshman Jillian Van Ness (Agawam, MA/Agawam HS) ran 55 meters in 7.76 seconds.
"I was really pleased to have 14 people qualify for the New England Division III Championships in our first meet of the season," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve Gardiner. "It was great to see three of our guys in the finals of the hurdles with schools like Boston University, Northeastern and New Hampshire when no one else had more than two guys in the finals. It was a very good for the season for both the men and the women."
The Corsairs will return to action at the Harvard Open next Saturday.
UMASS DARTMOUTH TRACK AND FIELD
