NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Two members of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's indoor track and field team have been honored by the Little East Conference for their performances at last weekend's LEC and New England Alliance Championships.
Freshman Chris Perry (Attleboro, MA/Dighton-Rehoboth HS/BCC) was named LEC Men's Field Athlete of the Week, while freshman Jessica Masse (Somerville, MA/Somerville HS) was named LEC Women's Rookie Field Athlete of the Week.
Perry won three of the four events he participated in and accounted for 35 points. He won the triple jump at 48 feet, 3 1/4 inches, setting meet and school records and qualifying automatically for the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships. He also won the long jump at 22 feet, 1 3/4 inches and the 200 meters in 22.84 seconds, while finishing fourth at 55 meters in 6.62 seconds, the third fastest time ever at UMD.
"Chris is in the midst of an outstanding indoor season," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve Gardiner. "He came to us extremely well-coached by Jerry Espinosa at Dighton-Rehoboth High School, which provided him a great foundation to build upon."
Masse also was a conference and Alliance champion, finishing first in the shot put and setting a meet record with a throw of 40 feet, six inches. . "Jessica has had an outstanding freshman campaign," said Gardiner. "Her high school coach at Somerville, Charles O'Rourke, was an integral part of her development as both a student and as an athlete, and that work has paid off during her freshman year at UMass Dartmouth."
The Corsairs will return to action at the New England Division III Championships this Saturday.
